Impressive Local Attractions

Living museums of American history at Colonial Williamsburg and other historical sites are the main attractions, but there is much more. Children especially love the living history museums where they become immersed in the daily life of the first settlers and the towns they built.

Williamsburg

It’s thrilling to see people in period costumes going about their lives. This includes tavern keepers, candle makers, bakers, cobblers, and much more. At night, with no electricity to maintain authenticity, the whole place has a mysterious atmosphere lit with only candles.

The College of William and Mary is also in Williamsburg. Founded in 1693, it is the second oldest college in the U.S. after Harvard. Several founding fathers studied there for at least some time, including Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, John Tyler, and James Monroe. The Wren Building, the most famous façade, is the oldest active educational building in the U.S. It was built in 1695 and renovated after a fire in 1732.

Throughout the campus are sculptures and there are free organ recitals in the chapel. You can also visit the Muscarelle Museum of Art, which has several visiting exhibitions per year.

Colonial Williamsburg

Governor's Mansion

Colonial Williamsburg is the country’s largest living history museum. Only five minutes from Wyndham Kingsgate, the entire precinct is recreated with characters, shopkeepers, farmers, taverns, and even a marching militia. You can go back to 18th-century living and experience what life was like. This is the top attraction in Virginia and attracts visitors from all over the world.

The taverns are working restaurants too, and Colonial Williamsburg offers parades, shops, gardens, and more than 100 reconstructed historic buildings. There are regular reenactments of trials, militia drills, and political meetings.

Jamestown Settlement

Captain John Smith Statue

The site of the first permanent English settlement in the New World, Jamestowne was established in 1607. The living history museum now known as Historic Jamestowne even has replicas of three English ships that brought people from England between 1610 – 1614.

Visitors experience life in the 17th century through immersive galleries, film, and outdoor recreation and there is even a functioning Powhatan Indian village. The living history park and museum are located about a mile from the original location of the town. You can see a reconstruction of the Jamestown Fort built in 1610 and of a Powhatan village.

For those with a serious interest in early colonial America, there are archaeological tours arranged by the Jamestown Rediscovery Project. Discoveries are regularly found. Who knows, you may be there when something is discovered.

Historic Yorktown

Yorktown Battlefield is an important place in American history. It is the site of the last battle of the Revolutionary War and the place where the British surrendered to George Washington in 1781. It’s an amazing place to visit especially for history aficionados. Interactive exhibits and films tell the story, and a re-creation of the Constitutional Army encampment is set up just like it was in 1781 with actors playing soldiers and demonstrating life at that time.

What About Day Trips?

Virginia Beach

If you want to go a little farther, consider beautiful Virginia Beach for a day away from history relaxing on the warm soft sand. It has miles of beaches, in fact, the longest recreational beach in the world, and oceanfront restaurants on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. It is the site of the East Coast Surfing Championships.

For a night on the town, consider Richmond or Newport News. Known as America’s First Region, it is very close to Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Hampton, and Suffolk.

How About Thrill Seekers?

There are venues where thrill seekers can get their fill of fast-paced fun. Busch Gardens Williamsburg has an adventure park with the famous Loch Ness Monster roller coaster as well as a live entertainment stage, a zoo, a playground, a cruise down the Rhine, spinning tea cups, and, for the little ones, talking to the Muppets.

In keeping with the area, it has a 17th-century theme and uses 21st-century technology to create a world-class roller coaster and more than 50 rides and attractions. It’s worth visiting even for people who are not thrill seekers because it has been voted the World’s Most Beautiful Amusement Park since 1990.

Water Country USA is the largest water park in Virginia and has pirate-themed rides, mini-golf with lots of water hazards, and your children will enjoy the wave pool and huge water slides with epic drops and twists and turns. There are specially designed areas for small children with play areas and small water slides as well as shallow pools.

For those who can’t get too much thrill, the Cutback Water Coaster is the only RocketBLAST coaster on the East Coast. It has a water jet propulsion system that takes water slides and roller coaster rides to a whole new level. Don’t forget the lazy river, cool drinks, and great food. If you plan to visit both Water Country and Busch Gardens you can get cheaper combination tickets.
