Why Visit Hilton Head?

Hilton Head is actually an island. In fact, you may hear the locals referring to it as "HHI" for Hilton Head Island. Known for its pristine beaches and great golf courses, Hilton Head was connected to the mainland by a bridge in 1956. This made it much more accessible so that everyone can explore its coastline and sample its attractions.

Hilton Head Island boasts 12 miles of gorgeous beaches along with opportunities to indulge in retail therapy and enjoy your pursuit of nature. Take a bicycle tour, go boating or explore the Coastal Discovery Museum.

You have the option to do as much or as little as you like once you arrive. The choice is entirely up to you.

Top Beaches in Hilton Head

Hilton Head beach

The number-one thing to do in Hilton Head is the beach. Make the shore your first stop, and you are certain to have an unforgettable vacation. You'll find access points to the beach pretty much everywhere you go. The vast majority of these have free parking and an easy pathway that leads you through the dunes and out to the water.

You may find that the beach immediately adjacent to the path is crowded, but all you have to do is wander a few yards in either direction to find some quiet and seclusion if that is what you desire.

Feel free to head out on the beach as early in the morning as you like but be sure that you're ready to head inland as the sun goes down. Policies on the island prevent the use of lights on the beach after dusk so that nesting sea turtles won't be disturbed.

Some of the best swimming beaches include Islanders Beach Park (the closest beach to Royal Dunes), Folly Field, Coligny and Driessen. Each of these is known for its calm water where even kids can swim safely. If you want to bike on the beach, opt for Burkes Beach, and if you are hoping to have a stretch of sand all to yourself, then give Fish Haul Creek Beach a try.

Visit Coligny Beach Park if you are hoping for a beach with all the trimmings. Tastefully decorated, this is Hilton Head Island's closest approximation to a typical seaside town. Coligny Plaza is loaded with numerous restaurants and shops that are fun and laid-back without being too kitschy.

Don’t Miss Harbour Town Lighthouse

Hilton Head Harbour Town Lighthouse

Perhaps Hilton Head's most well-known landmark, the Harbour Town Lighthouse, is considered a must-see attraction by most visitors. Located in the midst of the Sea Pines Resort district of Harbour Town, the famous red-and-white striped lighthouse is not only functional but also boasts an outstanding museum.

Built in 1970, the lighthouse is 90-feet tall. You'll climb the stairs and take in some fascinating exhibits along the way. The displays include artifacts and photographs depicting the island's history as well as an exhibit about the Coast Guard. Breathtaking views are available at the top of the lighthouse. Two gift shops are onsite if you want to pick up a souvenir.

Wonderful shopping can be found at Harbour Town. From boutiques selling home décor and furnishings to fashion, jewelry and art, there's a little bit of something for everyone here. Don't forget to pause at Harbour Town Bakery & Café for a muffin and espresso while you shop.

Harbour Town also is where you'll find operators offering sailing excursions, dolphin-watching cruises, pirate ship adventures, jet-ski rentals and kayak tours. There is even a golf course known as Harbour Town Golf Links, which has a particularly memorable 18th hole that has players aiming straight for the lighthouse. A tennis club and a playground round out the Harbour Town offerings.

More Quality Golf

Other notable golf courses on the island include Shipyard Golf Club, Atlantic Dunes, Heron Point, Oyster Reef Golf Club and the Arthur Hills Golf Course. If you are an avid player and have a particular course that you would like to conquer, be certain to make reservations well in advance, especially if you're visiting during the busy season.

One of the top attractions on Hilton Head is the Coastal Discovery Museum. Plan to spend about half of a day exploring the acres of land and the museum with its fascinating exhibits. Stroll along the boardwalks and nature trails to view the local wildlife or attend an outdoor theater presentation at the Bird's-Eye View Theater. A farmers’ market is held here every week, and there's an annual art show too.
