Background About Breckenridge Colorado

Some of the resort towns in Colorado were established and designed to be top-tier ski destinations. Although Breckenridge has become a superior location for skiers and snowboarders, that's not how it got started.

Founded in 1859, Breckenridge once was the quintessential gold rush town. It was settled at the base of the Ten Mile Range of the Rocky Mountains by prospectors who were hoping to strike it rich in the 1859 Pike's Peak Gold Rush.

Back then, Breckenridge was a rough-and-ready town, but things have settled down since then. This is now a sophisticated destination in which you can find all of the amenities of other upscale resort towns. From luxurious day spas to five-star resorts, Breckenridge has it all.

Best of Breckenridge in the Winter

Skiers on Breckenridge Ski Resort

Winter is the most popular time to visit Breckenridge and skiing on the slopes is one of the best ways to spend your time here. The ski resort lies immediately to the west of the Continental Divide and stretches across five mountain peaks. With that much available terrain, you'll have new adventures to conquer with each visit.

If you are learning how to ski, then you'll want to focus your efforts on Peak 8 and Peak 9. Peak 6, Peak 7 and Peak 10 are better suited to skiers with some experience. Even if you are a seasoned skier, you'll want to tackle Peak 8 at some point. It's not only the site of the town's origins but also boasts the continent's highest ski lift.

The Breckenridge Ski Resort is notable for its snowboarding too, but that's not the end of the possibilities for fun in the snow. Among the other things to do in Breckenridge in the winter are snowshoeing, snowmobiling, fat-tire bike riding and even dog sledding. Don't forget to coast down the sledding hill at Carter Park or to schedule a romantic sleigh ride complete with gourmet dinner.

Things to Do in Breckenridge in the Summer

Most people automatically think of winter when they think of the best of Breckenridge, but if you overlook the warmer months here, you're missing out.

As soon as the snow melts, mile upon mile of trails are revealed. Ideal for hiking and mountain biking, you could spend your entire vacation in your hiking boots or on a bike. While this is a great place to discover challenging hikes with plenty of elevation gain, there are numerous options that are less strenuous. Still, with the overall high elevation of the town, you are guaranteed spectacular vistas no matter where you roam.

Blue Lakes is another top attraction in the summer. This pair of alpine lakes is absolutely awe-inspiring. Several hikes make it easy to explore the area and get some unforgettable photos.

If you want to get out on the water, schedule a visit to beautiful Sawmill Reservoir in the White River National Forest. The lake covers ten acres at an elevation of 9,938 feet. Fishing for rainbow trout is always popular here, and this is a favorite place for locals and visitors to kayak, canoe or stand-up paddleboard.

Driving the Boreas Pass is another can't-miss attraction. It's a 22-mile drive that's lined with unforgettable scenery. No 4WD vehicle is required for this trek but be prepared to pass over an 11,481 foot summit, which is breathtaking in its own right. Pause at the old Section House at the top and set aside some time to try one or two of the trails.

Carter was one of those early prospectors who helped to establish Breckenridge. While he began his exploits as a miner, he became distressed by the damage mining efforts were causing to the Rocky Mountains and its native species. His efforts turned to conservation, and this museum is a fascinating monument to his work.
