Getting Oriented at Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe straddles the state line between Nevada and California. The lake is a dozen miles wide and 22 miles long. If you wanted to drive around it, it would require at least three hours, and that wouldn't leave you any time for enjoying the sights along the way.

A true four-season destination, Lake Tahoe boasts amazing things to do in every month. Visit during the summer for water sports, cycling, hiking and nature walks. Winter is no less enchanting with its sleigh rides, cross-country and downhill skiing, sledding, snowshoeing and snowmobiling.

No matter when you decide to visit, you can rely on a Lake Tahoe timeshare to provide the finest in accommodations and amenities. Surround yourself in the luxurious comforts of home even as you explore things to do in Lake Tahoe.

Hit the Slopes

Did we mention that Lake Tahoe is a snow playground? The mountains are magnificent, the skies are sunny and a relaxed atmosphere prevails no matter where you roam. With numerous ski resorts that are considered world-class, you'll never run out of terrain to discover in this winter wonderland.

One of the most popular ski destinations is Palisades Tahoe, on the eastern side of the lake near Tahoe City. The scene of the 1960 Winter Olympics, Palisades Tahoe has some of the most renowned ski runs in the region. In excess of 170 trails, 29 ski lifts and 3,600 acres of skiable terrain make this a bucket-list destination for many.

Another worthy option is the Heavenly Ski Resort. It lives up to its name with its awe-inspiring scenery. Easily accessible from South Lake Tahoe and the Heavenly Gondola, it's also the largest ski resort in the area, including nearly 5,000 acres of skiable terrain. This resort has runs that are suitable for skiers of all levels, and there's a Terrain Park for those wanting to attempt freestyle tricks.

Skiers also flock to Northstar in California, which is well suited to families. Located northeast of the lake near Truckee and with 100 ski runs, 20 lifts and more than 3,000 acres, Northstar is an excellent choice for intermediate skiers. Snow tubing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, telemark skiing and more all are available.

If you're looking for exceptional terrain, make Kirkwood Ski Resort your destination. About a 45 minute drive south from South Lake Tahoe, the pristine scenery and impressive terrain variety make this a must-do for experienced skiers. There are options for beginner and intermediate skiers if they want to marvel at the landscapes too.

Fun on the Beach

One of the best things to do in Lake Tahoe is to spend a day at the beach. This destination makes it easy to find a great stretch of lakeshore. In fact, you might have difficulty choosing a favorite.

Kings Beach is the best for many visitors because it offers so much variety. Visitors can swim, fish, paddleboard, windsurf, jet ski and boat to their hearts' content. If you prefer to stay on the shore, choose from the playground, half-court basketball court and volleyball courts.

Lester Beach in D.L. Bliss State Park is another of Lake Tahoe's top beaches. It can get crowded in the morning, and you do have to hike two miles to get to the beach from the parking lot, but most agree that the effort is worth it. While it's not great for swimming, you can canoe, kayak and paddleboard from here.

Visit Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park to bask in gorgeous Sand Harbor Beach. Activity options include swimming, volleyball, boating, water skiing, paddleboarding and more.

If you'll be in the vicinity of South Lake Tahoe, make some time to enjoy Pope Beach. Water sports and swimming are available throughout the summer, with equipment being available to rent. There's a concession stand as well.

Meeks Bay Beach offers an unspoiled stretch of shoreline, yet it offers amenities too. Located on National Forest Service land, the beach promises hiking, cycling, boating and swimming. Kayaking and windsurfing are enjoyed here on a regular basis.

Other Things to Do in Lake Tahoe

Most visitors stop by Emerald Bay State Park to enjoy the striking color of the water and the tree-covered hillsides. Also within the bounds of the park is Vikingsholm Castle, which was built on the site in 1929. Listed as a National Historic Landmark, it is possible to reach the estate by traversing a one-mile trail. Guided tours of the castle are available during the summer.

South Lake Tahoe is a favorite destination for hikers. Some of the most well-known treks include the Cascade Falls Trail, which is known for being family friendly. It's a two-mile loop that offers lake vistas and sensational views of Cascade Falls. Another option is the gentle nature hike called Fallen Leaf Lake Trail. It's found within the Fallen Leaf Campground and is a two-and-a-half mile journey.

If you'd like to get out on the water with someone else acting as skipper, try a boat cruise. This is one of the most relaxing things to do in Lake Tahoe. Numerous operators provide tours on different sections of the lake. Cruises leave from Incline Village, Timber Cove Marina, Zephyr Cove, North Tahoe Marina and many other spots.

If you visit Lake Tahoe in the summer, be sure to catch a performance of the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. Happening every year from mid-July through mid-August, the festival presents lively performances in a wonderful outdoor setting.

If you're hoping to do some shopping during your stay, drop by Heavenly Village Lake Tahoe where you can experience shops, restaurants, movie theaters, a seasonal ice rink, spas, mini golf and much more. Close to South Lake Tahoe on the California side, it's the perfect place for the whole family to play together.

Visitors looking to try their luck are in luck on the Nevada side of the lake with a number of casinos to choose from. The northern side near Incline Village has a casino adjacent to the Hyatt High Sierra Lodge, while South Lake Tahoe visitors can skip across the line to Stateline and familiar casino names such as Hard Rock, Bally’s and Harveys.
