Miami Beach is a fantastic destination for those who want to soak up the sun, play in the waves and dance the night away. While many regard this oceanfront city as the enclave of the wealthy, there are plenty of things for the more budget-conscious traveler to enjoy in the city and around the region. With a Miami Beach timeshare, this could be an unforgettable vacation for the whole family.

Getting Oriented in Miami Beach

Miami Beach from the air

The city of Miami is located in South Florida on the U.S. mainland. However, if you cross one of many available bridges, you'll find yourself on the other side of Biscayne Bay in Miami Beach.

This barrier island city is characterized by its fantastic beaches and its world-famous nightlife. There's no doubt that these are fascinating aspects of life in this city, but if you look deeper, you'll find that there's much more to appreciate.

When you get familiar with the many things to do in Miami Beach, it's possible that you'll want to visit the area several times. Scratch beneath the surface to find quiet, charming neighborhoods as well as happening night spots.

The main street in Miami Beach is Collins Avenue and, further south, Ocean Drive. Although you can drive through, it's almost better to stroll along so you can better appreciate the beautiful Art Deco buildings.

Art Deco Historic District

This is one of the most popular things to do in Miami Beach. Most of the buildings in the Art Deco Historic District of South Beach were built in the 1930s and 1940s after a 1926 hurricane came through and wiped out most of the structures that were already in existence.

Painted in pastels and boasting large neon signs, these buildings have been meticulously restored and now house all sorts of hotels, restaurants and bars. Awnings are placed along the ground floor of many of the structures, providing shady spots to enjoy a meal.

Iconic Miami Beach

You can tour the Art Deco Historic District for free, and one of the other free things to do in Miami Beach is to spend the day on the southern section of Miami Beach, South Beach. You'll find it across from all of those beautiful Art Deco buildings, and this is one stretch of oceanfront that seems to be buzzing 24/7.

The beach here easily is the most popular in the Miami region. People come here to see and be seen, but the shallow waters make for a spectacular place for the whole family to swim. The sand is pristine, and with Ocean Drive right behind the beach, you'll be spoiled for choice when it's time for a meal.

Miami Children's Museum

If you're traveling with kids, you'll definitely want to have the Miami Children's Museum on your list of things to do in Miami Beach. It's a welcome oasis in a destination that caters mostly to adults, and chances are good that parents will enjoy this stop as well.

A music production studio, an enormous piggy bank and a mock castle are among the top exhibits. When the heat is on outdoors, this is a great place to escape to grab some shade and air conditioning.

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

Situated on 28 lush acres, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a National Historic Landmark which used to be the winter retreat for a wealthy industrialist named James Deering. The 1916 mansion boasts 34 luxurious rooms and was built in the Italian Renaissance style by craftsmen who were brought over from Europe to ensure authenticity.

Filled with antiques from the 15th through the 19th centuries, the home and gardens are an exquisite reminder of a bygone era. Also on the grounds of the estate is an archaeological site that dates back nearly 50,000 years.

Lincoln Road Mall

Miami Beach is a famous vacation destination for the well-heeled. Whether you are budget-conscious or not, you'll want to spend a couple of hours exploring this upscale pedestrian shopping center.

Lincoln Road Mall is an outdoor mall that runs along Lincoln Road between Washington Avenue and Alton Street. At one mile long, you'll find a startling array of shopping in one convenient spot. Visit the Gap and Macy's as well as Banana Republic and Madewell. You'll find all sorts of opportunities for dining and imbibing along the way.

Historic Spanish Monastery

You might not expect to find an historic Spanish Monastery in Florida, but there's one that's waiting to be discovered in Miami Beach. The Monastery of St. Bernard de Clairvaux was constructed in Spain more than seven centuries ago. In the 1930s, William Randolph Hearst, the infamous newspaper magnate, had the monastery disassembled and shipped to Florida. The fully reconstructed monastery is open to visitors every day for a modest entry fee.

Everglades National Park

Perhaps the most memorable day trip that can be taken from Miami Beach will take you to the Everglades. Consisting of more than one million acres of protected marshland, this national park is an incredible place to watch birds, snakes, crocodiles and alligators in their natural habitat.

The highly informative Visitors Center is an excellent place to start. Outside of the building are several nature walks and boardwalks along which you will probably spot some wildlife.

Take a side trip to the Royal Palm Visitor Center to find the always popular Anhinga Trail, an easy walk that promises excellent alligator viewing. Adventurous visitors may want to schedule an airboat tour so that they can really explore the streams and marshes.

Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science

Whether you're traveling with kids or not, you may want to include this attraction on your itinerary. The institution is divided into four segments that include a planetarium, an aquarium and two exhibit halls with permanent and traveling collections.

The aquarium focuses on local sea life and boasts many outstanding views while the exhibits throughout the museum are fun, interactive and educational.

Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens

Established in 1938, this is perhaps the best place in the region to enjoy lush tropical vegetation without having to leave the city. The extensive garden stretches over nearly 85 acres. Accordingly, it's sensible to familiarize yourself with the various exhibits before you arrive so that you that see your favorites, which may include a butterfly house, one of the many sculptures and the Lougheed Spiny Forest of Madagascar.

Find a Miami Beach Timeshare

One of the best ways to ensure that you are rested and ready to sample all of the things to do in Miami Beach is to stay at a timeshare. These luxurious and well-appointed properties offer guests more amenities, larger suites and enhanced convenience.

A Miami Beach timeshare is your home-away-from-home. Choose a resort that's as close to the beach as possible so your family has their choice of swimming in the ocean or the pool. Try a property that includes a spa as well as a state-of-the-art fitness center and a game room for those hours when it's time to kick back and relax.

Amenities such as private bedrooms, kitchens, and whirlpool tubs can be included in your Miami Beach timeshare accommodations. If you are planning a getaway for the whole family, this is the ideal resort choice as everyone in your party will find the right opportunities to play, relax and share some quality time.
