Posted on September 01, 2022

Hilton Head Island is a delightful vacation destination off the coast of South Carolina, where you will find many excellent timeshare resorts, spectacular beaches, and tons of daytime and evening activities for all ages.

Its championship-level golf courses attract golfers from around the world, while its beautiful beaches and marine views draw in young families and anglers wanting to make memories and a big catch.

Activities and Attractions on Hilton Head Island

The island's secrets can be explored by air, sea, or by land - enjoyable ways to spend a day there. Some popular ways include a bike ride through the scenic trails, a boat tour along the surrounding the waters, or hopping aboard a helicopter for one of the island's aerial tours.

Twelve miles of scenic beaches line the island's shoreline, providing plenty of opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, and playing in the sand all over Hilton Head. It is what has made this place such a draw for families since the bridge was built to the mainland in the 1950s. Beach bicycling is encouraged on the island, as it is a great way to see more of the sandy scenery within a single day.

For anyone wanting a golfing vacation in South Carolina, this is the place to be, as the island has almost two dozen champion-level golf courses despite its small size.

Shopping and dining are also fun and exciting on the island. There are many open-air cafes and restaurants where you can eat outside and enjoy the fresh sea air, as well as many small shops and stores where you can pick out the perfect souvenir commemorating your vacation.

Top Hilton Head Attractions

When you are looking for places to go while enjoying your time at Hilton Head, you may want to start by visiting Coligny Beach Park. This popular jumping-off point has an excellent beach, but also connections to mass transit, bike trails, and also food, bathrooms, and beach equipment rentals.

This is the entry point to the largest and busiest beach on the island, but if you are looking for a quieter day at the beach you can walk or bicycle to several of the smaller and equally fun beaches such as Alder Lane.

The Harbour Town Lighthouse on the southern end of the island is one of the most distinctive sights you'll see while staying in Hilton Head timeshares. Its beautiful red and white striped exterior is a perfect backdrop for photos, and also serves as a visual aid for ships passing through the Marina and Intracoastal Waterway.

It is best viewed as part of a longer visit to Harbour Town, the upscale commercial center attached to Sea Pines Resort. There, you'll find plenty of shops, restaurants, and a marina that launches many of the dolphin tours, fishing charters, and kayak tours.

Another important stop on your island vacation will be at Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge, which sprawls across 4,000 acres of land and sea between Hilton Head and the mainland.

Thousands of birds and other animals call Pinckney Island their home, and it also contains some of the oldest archeological sites on the eastern seaboard, with signs of human habitation stretching back 10,000 years. Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge offers guided nature tours or you can take your bicycle, or strap on your hiking boots, and explore at your leisure.

Night Life and Fun

Much of the nightlife on Hilton Head Island stretches along the beaches which encircle the island, giving it the same coastal retreat flair as the daytime activities.

After the sun sets, you can often find live entertainment and delicious drinks at one of many establishments catering to locals and tourists alike. Some of the biggest draws include comedy tours, live music, and rooftop dancing.

Visiting Hilton Head with Kids

Families have been coming here for decades and making wonderful family memories. Over the years, attractions aimed at the younger generations have grown up and become cherished traditions in their own right.

The Sandbox Children's Museum near Coligny Beach Park is one of those places. It focuses on hands-on, fun exhibits that children can play with and learn from while having a great time.

The Coastal Discovery Museum showcases the natural and cultural history of the island and is a great way to teach your kids about what they might be seeing during the trip and even learn something new yourself. During the onsite and offsite tours, you can view wild horses, butterflies, plants, and other animals as well as learn about the people who have called this island their home.

Best Times to Visit

The warm summers are a blessing for anyone planning on spending their Hilton Head vacation at the beach, as the long and sunny days provide plenty of time for swimming, sandcastle building, and boating. Perhaps not surprisingly then, summer is the most popular time of year to visit Hilton Head timeshares, with Spring Break weeks in March/April a close second.

The slower season stretches from December through March, as family vacationers leave the colder northern regions to enjoy the relatively warmer climate in South Carolina. The average winter temperature on the island is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit, which is perfect for some of the island's outdoor pastimes on land, such as teeing off on one of its famous golf courses.

If you are looking to avoid the crowds or just hunting for a good deal and can be flexible on when you travel to Hilton Head Island, you may consider coming during the shoulder season, which runs from about September through November.

Average temperatures during these months range from 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, which can feel like a relief compared to the balmy summer highs. While there may be less live entertainment and events compared to the peak of the tourist season, many attractions and beaches will be less crowded.

No matter when you plan on vacationing on the island, your timeshare accommodations will provide you with a comfortable, home-like place to rest and relax between your adventures on the island.
